Haha….

I’ve been sitting here for a long time, of course…and even though Taiwan, especially after it rains, is beautiful, I miss Thailand already. Everything.

I miss walking to the San Sai market and being greeted by the ever familiar face of the kind Thai woman who feeds me almost daily on my diet of moo pbing and kao nyo. I miss feeling like I’ve just seen a giant Twinkie as the yellow song-taew pulls up to the curb where I’m standing and picks me up so I don’t have to walk in the drenching heat of Chiang Mai in the afternoon. I miss seeing mountains ALL THE TIME. I miss hearing chinchooks croaking everywhere I go, letting me know that they are aware of my presence and have no desire to make their presence visually known. Tonight I will not fall asleep to the sound of drunken women singing random karaoke songs so loudly it’s hard to even close your eyes, instead I will fall asleep to the sound of the plane’s engines cutting through the Pacific.

I’ve only been gone for a few hours, but I’m well aware of how much I took the wonder of that mesmerizing country for granted. I won’t be riding my precious motorbike anymore, and I won’t be learning how to perfect my basic Thai.

I’ve had a wonderful last few weeks. Work was amazing…I wish I could bundle up the Free Burma Rangers office and take it with me. The people, the work…..I really felt like I had a purpose. Though I don’t lack that feeling back home, I know that this was a different and sincere feeling of having helped people who were suffering from the brutality of their country. If you are unaware of what is going on in Burma right now, get educated. I will miss FBR, and I appreciate the opportunity they gave me to help them, if even for a small amount of time.

I am excited to see my family though…. I’m a very blessed person, thanks to my Saviour. Lord willing I’ll make it through the next day and a half of travel, and be back home in Danvers, Illinois. Thanks for coming along on the ride. ;)

Has it really been two weeks?

Seriously, where does the time go here?!?! I can't believe it's been so long! I'm sorry, I am....well, not really, but I'll sincerely try to do better in the next few weeks.

SO! What all has happened? So much.

First of all, I love my motorbike. I love it. I went on a nice Sunday morning ride yesterday, and I just knew that I had to get one....I can't imagine life without it anymore. I feel as if it's a part of who I am inside. Am I exaggerating? Perhaps....but I think you get the picture. My friend Autumn and I rode all around Doi Saket, and it was breathtaking. Seeing the morning dew on the rice fields and watching the water buffalo wake up was one of the highlights of my week. I wasn't ready to stop! But my gas tank was. My friends, there is nothing like a sunrise in Thailand. At sixty miles an hour. ;)

Angela (my roommate) and I have sponsored a young lady at our apartment. We hosted her for ten days, and it was awesome. Her name is Mariah Herington, and she was the perfect guest! Seriously.....so willing to get involved in missions ministries and just as willing to do whatever tourist conquest that we forced down her throat. Haha! She came to FBR with me one day, and I was excited to show someone around the place that I work. We went to waterfalls, The Tiger Kingdom, and many other adventures. One of the best being the children's prison. Chiang Mai has a secure, but spectacular facility where they house a couple hundred kids that have been pushed and pulled through the Thai drug ring, and have found themselves in the most desperate of times. I stood up to speak to the group that had filed into the open room where we were teaching, and saw the faces of kids who had been forced to grow up much too soon. A lot of them were happy to see us, knowing that we had games and prizes prepared for them, but others couldn't hide the sadness of the things they'd seen and experienced as I spoke to them of the time I'd spent working with young people their age at the Lake County Juvenile Detention Center. It was a wonderful day....we all had a great time.

I also got to go to a Lisu village for the weekend! Three hours up a mountain, which to me felt mostly uphill, is where we stayed. The people were more than welcoming and we feasted on potatoes, rice, and plants that were picked from the very yard we were living in. We slept on mats on the floor, surrounded with mosquito nets and praying that the rats that were falling off the ceiling would not creep in through our safety nets. Haha....oh to be that terrified again....I've never felt closer to God. So we held a Bible study/worship time on Saturday night, and then had an all-day service with some families in the village. A family was led to Christ and baptized down by the river near the village, and oh what a sight that was! All of these Lisu people singing hymns as we walked down the bank to the steadily flowing river beneath, and three white people trekking through the mud trying to get pictures of this fantastic occasion. I couldn't have asked for more!

Lisu is a simple language, and one that I tried to somewhat grasp during my short stay there. I learned the alphabet and how to read the Lisu music, which to me is so beautiful. They sing either a cappella or to the strumming of a guitar....I tried to hide my cheesy smile as the villagers sang, their voices carrying to the clouds, but I couldn't. It was some of the most beautiful words I've ever heard, and I barely understood them. :)

I went to a special Thai dinner on Friday, and wasn't shocked in the least to find that for a very small amount of money, you are provided a feast as well as hours of entertainment. I was able to see the full culture of Thailand by watching each tribe that resides in Thailand show off their tribal dancing. I was also influenced, probably by too much sticky rice, to join the dancers on the stage. In the words explained to my friend John here at the office, I looked like a "Seizuring duck". That is literally the best description that I could give you.

I went to Burma to renew my visa, and other than wanting to vomit upon stepping over the border, I had a great time! The Burmese know how to cook. I ate basted duck and maple sugar balls. Haha! Great mixture. I loved it....it's a poor country, but the people enjoy your business and were very welcoming....not too mention the scenery around there is beautiful! I took a lot of pictures....I'll try to post some here.

Well this has been a boring post! I'm trying to fill you in, but I can't describe to you in detail everything that happened without writing a book. My goodness gracious. People have been e-mailing me and asking why the fat I haven't updated this in awhile. WELL. I've been busy. Haha....allow me to begin.

Since it's pretty much calmed down now, I don't mind saying that last week was a little nerve-wracking. I'm sure many of you have seen on the news all about the protests that have been going on in Bangkok. People killed, buildings burned to the ground. Government establishments set on fire, and many wounded. Yeah, well we're ten hours from that. HOWEVER, once the protests leaders surrendered due to the hideous things that were happening and the large amounts of people getting hurt, the protesters in Chiang Mai became extremely upset. On Wednesday after the surrender, they held a huge rally in the heart of Chiang Mai. We watched from the apartment as they set part of the bridge on fire, as well as shot off their guns and threw flaming bottles of alcohol into the governor's backyard. Now, I knew that I wouldn't get hurt, we live in a neighborhood far from that mess, but my heart broke for the people in Chiang Mai. We were set to a curfew and the schools and many workplaces were closed, but it was sad to see such an unrest in such a beautiful and laidback community. Things have slowly gotten back to normal, and so far we haven't had many more problems than that one night. Keep Thailand in your prayers folks. These people deserve that much.

Also! I decided last minute to go on a weekend bus trip with one of the new interns with FBR, Jill, and her friend Taylor. WOW! WHAT A GREAT TIME! We took a bus through the gorgeous mountains of Thailand, and finally ended up in a quaint rural area known as Sukothai, home to the friendliest of guest houses and the most breathtaking temple ruins this side of anywhere! Haha.....we stayed at Sabaidee Guest House, where we were three of the few guests that they had there, and they waited on us hand and foot. They were the nicest group of Thai people I have ever met, and spoke English well, and catered to us with the love of a mother with her child. I felt very special.

We got there on Saturday morning, after missing our bus on Friday night and having to stay overnight at the hostel that Jill and the other intern, Kadilynn, reside at in Chiang Mai, and our adventure began. For only a couple bucks each, we rented two automatic motorbikes, which resemble some jacked up American mopeds, and set our for the ruins. BEAUTIFUL! AWESOME! SPECTACULAR! Those are just a few of the words that were used when we went into the historical park. Folks, you're missing out. I've said it before and I don't mind saying it again. There's nothing like it. The pictures don't do it justice. And yes, I do have pictures.

Now I'm back at the apartment, FBR work is starting to mount up again in the most glorious of fashions...I'm praying about some opportunities that God has placed before me at this time, but until then, Thai lessons start in 26 minutes, and then perhaps a visit to the vet to get the cat's claws clipped like the loving caretaker that I am :cough cough: and a much-needed trip to the grocery store, where I'm sure I will be ransacked by many busy Thai people. I LOVE LIFE! And I miss you all.

CHARGE!

So many things….where to begin? My life is crazy. My schedule is crazy. But there are a few things I’d like to discuss.

First of all, I was charged by water buffalo. Angela and I were driving to a small food stand on our village road, and as we were nearing the woman’s house who owns the stand, several water buffalo residing in a nearby field came charging towards the car. I don’t panic often…in fact, I haven’t really panicked in awhile. But I’m not gonna lie, when I came to the realization that these water buffalo had no real intention of moving out of our way, I suddenly lost all mental control and thought that a cow was going to be the reason I have an obituary in next week’s Pantagraph. To say that I regretted drinking so much water during the day at that moment is an understatement. Luckily, we survived due to some swerving as well as Divine Power. ;) These “chattle” as I like to call them were shortly followed by a small Thai man running with a cigarette in his mouth, chuckling as he went. Interesting…and only in Thailand.

Secondly, mole hairs. Yeah, you heard me. Mole hairs. I noticed that an elderly Thai man had a single black hair growing out of his mole, and I had no choice but to ask him why. He spoke Thaiglish, as I call it, which is a mixture of Thai and English, and said that Thai men believe it is a sign of good luck and wisdom to have a long black hair growing out of one’s mole. WOW. He said that some have grown over a foot long. Can you imagine? I have now set on a quest….I am rubbing Miracle Grow on any mole found on my body, and we’ll see the good fortune it brings.

Thirdly, Thailand does not have many cemeteries. They don’t believe in burials, the Buddhist people believe in cremation….and they also believe in cremation aiding reincarnation. Now, this is oh so interesting because what I thought was a miniature temple next to Wat Mae Guayang Pbay, the temple that our street is known for, is actually a huge oven in which bodies are placed and burned. I checked it out yesterday, and couldn’t believe it! It’s a massive oven, and there are pews placed outside of it for people to watch. Now this is a common practice that isn’t given a second thought in Thailand, but I was mesmerized by it. I couldn’t imagine watching a loved one of mine being placed in an oven and set on fire, dead or not! Craziness! I am blessed to know where I’m going when I die, and to know that how I’m taken care of after I’m dead makes no difference, I’ll already have spent quality time with my Father. J

Fourthly, I can’t remember. I know that there was something of importance, and for the life of me I wish I could remember, but I can’t. But I will. Soon, I will, and I will let you know. Oh! Exciting news though….two girls joined our team today at work! No longer just me and the guys, but now two very nice girls who I enjoy. What a blessing! I also had some visitors these past few days working with me with the videos, media, etc., because they’re film-makers from Paris, France doing a documentary on human rights abuse in Asia. It’s a great film, and I enjoyed meeting them. Well, off to bed. I have a busy day tomorrow, and a lot of Thai to learn. All of the months, in fact. So far I know that I was born on yii-sip-hok, duan Singhakhom. (the 26th of August.) I’ve got a night safari going on tonight, and even though I don’t really know what the heck it is, I’m stinken excited about it.

I just Skyped a little bit with Misty…makes me laugh, and takes me back to the first time I came to Thailand. Everyone Skyped me every two hours. The movie “Taken” had just come out and people thought I was going to get trafficked for sure. HAHAHAHA….things are a bit better now. They’ve accepted the fact that I will be overseas every once in awhile, and there’s a chance that they’re going to have to----: insert long, deep sigh :---- let go. Yes, things were quite different then. It’s only been a few months, and I feel as though my whole life has changed! Haha…

Well, in case you haven’t read my Facebook, I have a burn on my leg, and it hurts. Ha….I was walking back to the apartment from work, and a random man on a motorbike stopped and told me to get on. Before you begin the lecture of riding with strangers, let me explain how you can tell the difference between men that mean well here and men that don’t. Well, I can’t exactly explain, but seriously, I could tell from the way he was talking that he knew where I lived and that, because of the heat, which is what he said, he wanted to take me there so I didn’t have to walk. I hesitated, as one probably should, but then thought, “Oh well, I either accept the definite death sentence from the heat or the possible one from riding with this guy….” And I hopped on. It felt great. I haven’t felt wind in Thailand in awhile, so I just closed my eyes and enjoyed the ride. And, exactly as he said, he pulled into the rocky driveway of my home and said “Thank you”. I’m pretty sure that I’m supposed to say that first, but I said thank you as well and hopped off. Unfortunately, I am a moron and burned my leg in the process. He felt bad, but it wasn’t his fault. I apparently smoked something before I rode with him. HAHAHAHA….not really, but it felt like it.

As I was walking though, I had noticed a small caterpillar about the size of my pinky nail crawling on the road. All I kept thinking was, “I wonder if that caterpillar realizes that he was born in THAILAND. THAILAND?!?! Of all places in the world that God could have created him, He chose THAILAND.” Then I began to ask myself a series of trivial questions…..is that caterpillar thankful? Does he realize the greatness of the God who created him? Just very strange awkward thoughts that did not make any sense. But I soon realized that I was replacing myself with that tiny caterpillar. Did I realize how blessed I was to be born and spoiled in the States? Did I also realize how blessed I was to have the opportunity to bring the Gospel to the people in Chiang Mai and other places where I’ve been able to talk about Christ? Am I thankful for everything God has given me? Or do I take most of the time to complain about the things He’s placed in my life, and given more abundantly? Hmmm….more on these thoughts some other time.

I’m looking forward to tourist activities this coming week, and the chance to get more tracts to pass out to the villages here. I’m hoping that the church I’m going to tomorrow will let me have a box of tracts, since I’m out of the amount I took last week. What a blessing it’s been here! Can’t wait for the next six weeks. I can’t believe time is flying so quickly.

I miss my friends, I miss my family, I miss my ministries, I miss my job. But I realize that this was indeed, God’s plan and God’s perfect timing, and I know He will use it for His glory. Psalm 16:11- “Thou wilt shew me the paths of life. In thy presence is fullness of joy. At thy right hand there are pleasures forevermore.” I love it!

Well, it’s now Sunday evening here….I LOVED the Night Safari. I was attacked by many wild beasts, and Angela, against my better judgment, shoved me into the pit of crocodiles, for which I nearly lost my life, but other than that, there was nothing but good times. HA!

Church was AMAZING this morning. The Pastor had a simple message that couldn’t have been more than 10-15 minutes, but his sermon was perfect, on the spot, and needed. He preached on John 5 and how Jesus healed the lame man beside the pool of Bethesda…..and how the man first had to respond to Christ with the desire TO be healed before he experience the healing itself! Amazing! I loved it. Then we went to the waterfall on the outskirts of Chiang Mai. People, why you didn’t join me on this journey, I’ll never know. It was the most beautiful place on earth, and I’ll never forget the time there. We climbed the rocks as the waterfall plunged over our feet, and nothing could’ve been more breathtaking or inspiring than watching the water wash over those rocks…clear as could be. I was terrified at first…the moss on the rocks wasn’t that encouraging, but as soon as I took a step into the rocks underneath the water, I realized that my footing was barely stable, and for the most part could climb the rocks with ease. We climbed down the waterfall a couple hundred feet, and wow….it was gorgeous! It’s just not possible to be in the middle of God’s creation and not be thankful for these things He’s given to us.

Tomorrow starts a new day of being alone in the office at FBR! And perhaps finally getting the guts to get that motorbike. We’ll see if I’m feeling that one in the morning….hahahaha….

Oh, and P.S.- Word to future travelers: The Salsa Kitchen in Chiang Mai has the world’s BEST Mexican food. Oh my sweet Moses, I’ve never enjoyed food so much. Ok, maybe I have, but still….you get what I’m saying. Also, their ketchup is SPECTACULAR! And they don’t hold back, which is personally my favorite part of that restaurant! Take my words of wisdom and enjoy!

SUP?!?!

Helloooooo e’erbody,

So I left work early yesterday. I had my first Thai lessons, since the ones for Tuesday I cancelled, since I’ve been a little more sleepy due to jet lag than usual, and they WENT WELL! She said I remembered a lot, and she couldn’t believe it. I felt like I had done horribly…..I had looked for a Thai teacher in my area, and of course, who would’ve thought that no Thai teacher could be found in central Illinois?!?! HAHAHAHA…..but no really, I wouldn’t mind learning the language completely. I want to be fluent in three languages by the time I’m forty, and so far all I’ve got down is English and sarcasm. ;)

We had a problem with the computer systems yesterday. I don’t know if they were on overload or what but the external drives that store all of the reports just shut down. I tried to find the problem, but fried my fingers in the process, moving my hands around back like a child feeling its way around for the bathroom door at 3 a.m., searching for a loose wire, and I still can’t feel the tips of them! Hahaha….today’s a new day though! All of the guys have left me for Burma, so it’s just me, myself, and I working the office while they’re gone. No worries….by the time I went to bed last night I’d received over ten e-mails from all of the guys with a favor or a job that they’d like me to do. Good times ahead! May God be with me so I don’t MESS THIS UP.

Pepper, the cat, has been my constant companion the last few days. I hate to admit it, but I’m starting to enjoy his presence. When I come home after work, I’m still very much a girl. No matter what kind of strong attitude I kept around the guys, no matter how much coffee I drank there that had the same consistency as motor oil, none of that matters. When I come home, I go to my room, and I cry from what I’ve seen. Pepper somehow knows my routine, and he will slowly walk towards me, as if not wanting to scare me, he then jumps on my bed in a quick, fluid movement, and then rests on my chest, setting his head close to my neck as he listens to me cry for a bit. Dumb cat, he’ll never realize how much that means to me. Yesterday we had a man send in a report with such a horrific photo log, but it was inspiring nonetheless. To end his letter he remarked, “The Brightness of the Heavenly Father will always Shine Our Way if We Follow Him”. He was born in Burma, and is now dedicating his life to helping his people. Beautiful.

There’s a lot I’d like to say, but I must get ready for work! Our internet connection isn’t very good right now, so I have to make due with sporadic entries here and there. Have a lovely evening, friends. Have I explained my job to you yet? Here we go...

I am a report processor. Any reports coming in, ranging from 10-100 pages, have to be processed on separate folders on the computer I use. I won't go any further, I feel like I'm losing you to boredom with the little I've explained so far. The first day I was here it took me almost SIX HOURS to do one report, since there is so much involved. I can now happily say that so far today, after four hours in the office, I have completed fourteen reports. Woohoo! But it's been rough. I've had to see a lot of photos, video footage, etc., that is going inside the boundaries of Burma. Why people aren't more aware of the genocide, I'll never understand. Today I saw a five-month old baby that had died from a gunshot wound. It was horrifying....the picture was so sad....it was of the mother holding the child. I could barely handle it. I'm sorry....I shouldn't explain these things. It's unnecessary, but I need prayer. I need prayer that God comforts my thoughts when I leave the office. The lack of sleep and increase of nightmares hasn't been good for my schedule or for my jet lag. But I signed up for this! I love it, and I know I'm helping the people of Burma.

On to better things! I learned how to say "God loves you" in Thai. Phracaaw Raak Khun. I'm excited! I've been passing out Thai tracts to people as I walk home, since I can't speak fully to explain the Gospel to them, and now they'll have some idea of what I'm handing them! It's been so wonderful to meet the people around here, and I'm loving it more and more every day. Thailand is "The Land of Smiles", and the people here are more than friendly! Constantly walking with me, trying to use what little English they know to find out more about me. It's always a pleasant walk to and from work.

Last night....I ACCOMPLISHED A GREAT TASK! After a small war in the corner of the house involving short screams and reptilic jumps, I caught.....a CHINCHOOK! Do you remember me telling you about those? These tiny little lizard/gecko creatures. And they are EVERYWHERE....but they're so fast! It's terribly hard to catch one. Angela (my roommate) told me that they bite and don't let go...but I'm willing to see for myself. I tried to keep him and name him Baxter, but as soon as I set him on my hand he leaped like a flying squirrel onto the wall and away into the shadows of the night. Fear me, ye chinchooks, you may have won the battle, but I shall win this war!

Haha....it makes me laugh. As soon as I walked back to the couch in defeat from the whole mess, Angela just shook her head and said, "If you don't have anything to do, you find something ridiculously entertaining to do."

She speaks the truth.

Miss you!

MONSOON!

Well readers,

I’m sitting at the office. Power’s down, and there’s a torrential DOWNPOUR outside….we may die of drowning here, and I just want my mother to know that I love her. My siblings may evenly disperse what little I have saved, and my car may be donated to the Free Burma Rangers to use in Thailand once it’s paid off by my life insurance policy.

Ok, so it’s not that bad. But I have to walk a bit in the mess before catching a song-taew to take me back to the road that I will, once again, walk back to my apartment on. I’m gonna get soaked. But ya know what? It’s so stinken hot, that I just don’t care! It’s a beautiful thing….oh? Did I explain what a song-taew was? It’s an open, multiple person taxi. It only costs about thirty cents in American dollars for it to take you wherever you want to go….that’s on its route, anyway. But the fun part? Flagging one down….I walk about a half a mile every day down the village road to the main road, where I wait for a song-taew, while being entertained by numerous Thai construction men that come up and offer me rides. They’re just excited to talk to someone who isn’t native Thai, and I laugh and pretend I know what the heck they’re saying….even though I absolutely do not. HAHA! I know very little Thai….many phrases, and I can understand the subject matter being spoken about, but nothing exact.

On that note, I am supposed to start Thai lessons again tomorrow. I have to say, I’m a little nervous. But I was promised that my teacher, Khru Deeng, would not be as pushy as the last time. She was wonderful, but since she only had two weeks to teach me all of the Thai that I know, she overwhelmed me daily. I could count to 100 by the second day. Why? Because I had a thousand Thai things running into my head, and as happy as I am to know how to successfully (somewhat) count to one hundred, I’d rather take things slow and “Simmah down nah.” Haha….

Well I’m back in the apartment, watching U.S. Marshals with Thai subtitles and enjoying as they say in Italy, "Il Dolce Far Niente”, or the sweetness of doing nothing. J

The work begins....

Well hello there, fellow readers! Let me tell you a little bit about my day….

I woke up at five….I’m trying to wake up early every day to keep my body in pace with the time change, and it’s worked pretty well so far! I’m not too tired, and I sleep very well through the night. I like Thailand, and I think my body does too. Took a shower…now, let me tell you, the shower here has a HUGE window beside it. Outside you can see the treehouse-like village that I live in, the farms, the cows, which look NOTHING like the cows I’m used to, they’re far more albino and anorexic, the chickens, the river, everything! Not to mention the sounds of Thailand- Motorbikes passing through, the weird birds calling out what sounds like “Eat Me!”, and chinchooks burping for everyone to hear. Chinchooks are lizards that reside in every nook and cranny of this building. Some are as tiny as my pinky, others are huge and want you to know where they are and what they’re doing at any given moment. I love them, and I often find myself conversing with them as I make tea by the stove or sweep the dirt off of the balcony here. I’m a fairly interesting person, so they don’t seem to mind, right? Anyway, I was so distracted by the sights and sounds that I must’ve been standing in the shower too long, because all of the sudden the water just (BLIP!) shut off. Shampoo in hair and everything. Lucky for me there was a small trickle coming out of the shower head, so I contorted myself around in various positions until my entire head had been soaked. Haha! It was quite an experience. That tells you a lot about Thailand though. So much to take in! It’s wonderful!

Today was my first day of work. When I got to the office, half of the team was already there and starting. I pulled my laptop out and began what I thought might be easier than it sounded. NOPE! Oh my Moses, the paperwork with FBR is overwhelming….there’s so much to do!

Let me explain what FBR is…the Free Burma Rangers is a non-profit relief organization that sends out teams of ex-military personnel, missionaries, and medical professionals to aid the people in Burma. Burma is faced with SO much political unrest and distress. The Burmese government has taken abusive action on the people there, and it has ended in numerous deaths, executions, burned homes, villages, and people, as well as much sexual abuse, etc. that has been brought on the Burmese people by the military soldiers that they should be able to follow and trust. One of my jobs today was to look over the website and organize the photos and reports that have been posted by the relief teams in the past year and a half. I saw things that no one should ever have to see. I was devastated. My team consists of all guys, except one girl that I’ve barely seen, and I didn’t want to cry in front of them, but it was hard. I live in Illinois, and applied this as if there were this kind of thing going on in Indiana, or Iowa! It’s so close to Thailand! And no one seems to know about it. My job is to process the reports sent in by the teams in Burma, and to make sure that we’re tracking the teams at all times, so that they don’t come into contact with any of the Burmese officials. Though not common, since they’re well-prepared, being caught has led to the death of some of the Rangers…the government is not soft on those who are assisting the people. You can find out more about them at www.freeburmarangers.org.

All that to say, I need your prayers. It’s a difficult job, and I need to be able to do it without actually thinking about what I’m processing and putting into the computer. I have to focus, and realize that processing these reports is assisting every member of every team. And pray for FBR. They need it.

I worked from 10-5, since they start at 10, and I left early because I had to get home somehow, and I’m not allowed to be out at night after six. A nice man in a motorbike taxi drove me to the street where my apartment is located, and he blew me kisses when I gave him the equivalent of 3 dollars for the ride. Wow! No sir, thank YOU! It’s stinken hot here, and you saved me a sweaty mess! Haha…

Oh! I have discovered the fruit of heaven! It’s called lie-chee, I did that on sound, not spelling. It grows on trees here, and it comes in this hard, pointy shell. You have to bite the shell until it breaks, then peel back the outward skin until, HALLELUJAH! you see the white fruit inside. It tastes….well, amazing. I love the food here! I went shopping in the supermarket yesterday and I could barely take it all in! By the way, the Thai people shop with their carts the way they drive….no rules, just run ‘em over and do your business! I LOVE IT!

Well! Tomorrow’s a new day! I feel like I haven’t shared half of my adventures, but more will come! And hopefully pictures….I’m TERRIBLE at taking them!

Your friend,

Kendra

And we're back!

Well, if you’re reading this, you’ve probably fallen into the trap of my family’s morbidly terrifying Facebook statuses, which are typed while my relatives are consumed with worry over my well-being. Fear not, folks, I AM SAFE! For the most part…..my flights here have been securely uneventful, and fairly comfortable. My feet have swollen to a great size….some people have stared, probably wondering if I was that girl on the “Mystery Diagnosis” show who found out she had an acute form of elephantitis in both feet. Oh yes, it’s bad. I didn’t experience this at all the last time I flew to Chiang Mai, but perhaps it had something to do with the new seat-mate I had, an older Vietnamese man who enjoyed cuddling every time he dozed off into a world that I really didn’t want to be a part of. I spent most of the 14-hour flight in the fetal position, which would definitely be a good cause for deformity in both limbs. Haha!

In case I haven’t mentioned this before, Asia is beautiful. Everything about Asia is breathtaking and interesting. From the wealthiest parts of Hong Kong to the third-world poverty of Thailand, I love it here. I can hardly close my mouth, even in the airports! I’m surrounded by colors, art, strange fashion senses, and my new favorite thing in this wonderful place, their coffee. I had the best coffee that I have ever tasted IN MY LIFE on an airplane today. I used one cream and one sugar, and watching it mix together in the delectable syrup they call “Chinee Cawfee” made my mouth water a little bit. Oh my….I took one sip and new that I was in love. Forever….it left a taste in my mouth that stayed with me like a perfect holiday memory. Yes, I’m getting poetic about one sip of coffee. I don’t know how they did, but Cracker Barrel has a lot to learn. I can’t wait to feed into my newfound addiction once I actually hit the ground!

I’m very tired….I’ve tried to keep myself awake so I wouldn’t fall into an awful jetlag, and I’m just plain TIRED. I keep thinking about the little twin bed with the red comforter that’s waiting for me at the apartment, and I just can’t wait….and neither can my fat feet! I’m definitely going to need a shower though. I love watching the expert world traveler’s walk by, who have figured out, which I have not yet UNFORTUNATELY, how to put up their hair to where it doesn’t look like they’ve gone without a shower for two or three days, and they look refreshed. I look like I just came out of a UFC fight….the one with five five-minute rounds, against someone who is twice my size and hates my guts. Sweet Moses….I need some shampoo, and maybe mascara. C’mon people, I am a girl….and there are good-looking foreigners here.

Well, I have arrived! Besides my left foot being the size of a soccer ball, all is well! I went right to sleep when night-time came, and slept until 5:30. That’s not too shabby, if I do say so myself! I hope it stays this way!

I’ll probably take a day or two to get adjusted. I’ve unpacked and now all I have is the dilemma of car, or motorcycle. I still have yet to even come close to a decision. While a bike would seem the smarter idea, since it’s half the price, and I would actually OWN it instead of rent it, which would be to the financial benefit of the missionaries, I am very scared. I need to get over those fears, not to mention I would probably be hurting the young man who’s offered to let me rent his car….it would be a nice financial benefit for him as well, so I’m dealing with a little dilemma of guilt vs. frugality as well. Haha! The good times are rolling already.

Thank you for staying in touch, feel free to say hello!

HOME! Wow....I just never updated this as much as I should have! So much happened every day that it was hard to write it all out every night!

What an amazing time I had in Thailand! I didn't want to go, nor was I prepared to leave....it all happened so fast! I should've burned my passport....I think that would have been sufficient. ;)

During my last few weeks there I was able to help Tom Silkwood with the lighting on set....I wasn't able to help as much as I would have liked to, but I was hardly ever at the building for the first few weeks, so we took a day to fix some of the cameras. The time and focus that it takes to build a movie set was well beyond my expectations. I praise God that He uses the efforts and skills of the Silkwoods and their staff to do such a time-consuming work for Him! Their labor pays off in many ways, and I'm thankful for it.

The weekend before I was able to help them, I was a high school counselor at Hume Lake in a mountain resort in Chiang Mai. Hume Lake is a very popular Christian camp back in the States, but every other year they haul out some of their staff to Thailand and hold a camp for missionary kids and other high schoolers interested. We were able to see many come to know the Lord that week, and the Lord really blessed us with the speaker, Chris, who has a way of captivating the hearts of any around him, and the students loved him. God was great! He worked on my heart as well....

My plans are to return to Thailand.....I'm filling out another teaching application and praying over it, as well as considering my options for volunteering in other ministries. I'm open to what the Lord has for me....He has allowed me to love the people of Thailand and to love helping the ministries there as well. Only God knows what is in my future! I love that song, "Many things about tomorrow, I don't seem to understand, but I know Who holds the future, and I know Who holds my hand." So true! And I couldn't praise Him enough for it.

Thank you for keeping updated with me....you all have been very patient in waiting sometimes weeks for me to do so....I tried to keep as many things updated as I could, but it's not one of my talents, staying in touch. Haha! Enjoy the pictures! For those of you nearby, I'll be speaking twice about my trip there....once on Saturday, November 7, at the International Missions Dinner at Grace Baptist in Tremont, and I'll have a slideshow with some more pictures of my trip, and also at My Sister's Keeper ladies meeting on Tuesday, November 10, at 6:30 p.m. You can get ahold of me if you need directions! Thanks again!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://kendramcbee.blogspot.com/2009/11/home-i-am-hereyadda-yadda-yadda.html' title='HOME! Time seems to go by so quickly here! I tell ya! So much has been going on, that I don't even know where to begin! We started the second and last English camp with the young girls from the Daughters of Ruth, and it went GREAT! I loved each and every one of them SO much. They ranged in age from 7-13, and they were wonderful girls and quick learners! Thank g'ness. Hahaha......I'm trying to get some pictures uploaded now....but the signal is really weak today, so it may take a few more days. Sorry folks!

What else did we do? Oh! On Wednesday we went to the Chiang Mai Zoo. Talk about amazing! In America they won't let us anywhere NEAR the animals, and here they practically roam free?!?! I fed a hippo, an elephant, a giraffe, and a STINKEN LEOPARD! Yeah, you heard me, a LEOPARD! It was the best day ever. The place is HUGE, and we walked about ten miles, but the girls loved it, and so did I. It was by far one of my best days here. The girls were so sweet....I told them that I have this strange fear of crocodiles, and so a few of them tried to distract me while we went past the gator area....haha, I knew where we were, but I pretended not to so they'd feel good. Ha! They're so precious!

The Lord was able to give me the opportunity of speaking at the Chiang Mai Women's Correctional Facility in the heart of Chiang Mai. I was told by the Aa-jaan (pastor) that they usually had a small group of about 10-20 women come, and he asked me to speak to them and give them my testimony. "Well sure!" I thought. What's a small group of women! Well we walked into the prison yard and there sat about 300 women. I was stinken terrified. I had to pray ALOT before getting up there. I had a translator, so that was a real blessing, but scary nonetheless. I gave them the verse, John 14:18, where Jesus says, "I will not leave you comfortless. I will come to you." I explained the verse in context, but also how they can apply it to their own lives. So many broken women....I cried when I left. My heart is definitely in the prison ministry. These women are so tender and hungry for the Gospel. I hope that many were able to come to know the Lord through my testimony and invitation. They were as much a blessing to me as Lord willing the Holy Spirit was to them through my words.

Tomorrow I head out for Missionary Kids' Camp up in the mountains. I'll be back on Tuesday! Hopefully with lots of pictures and great stories! Have a wonderful weekend folks!

I need to get some stinken pictures on here!

So.....today was the best day ever. I was asked to lead devotions today with the girls. I do it through Angela Morse, who translates for me. She's great! The Lord really put it on my heart to do the Romans Road with the girls, and to give my salvation testimony. I didn't ask after we had an invitation who accepted Jesus Christ into their hearts, because I know that the girls would be embarassed, but I believe some did....and Angela mentioned it later that one in particular, Nee, looked as though she had tears in her eyes after the prayer. God is SO good! I feel so honored and privileged that He would allow me this opportunity to serve Him in Chiang Mai. How wonderful it is to know that I can freely talk about His sacrifice to others, and see them so willingly come to the cross.

Everything about Chiang Mai has been wonderful so far. As I walk through the little village area where I'm staying each morning, I'm met with kind faces of people who either want to take a picture with my camera, or want to walk and talk with me. Unfortunately that's very limited, since I don't speak that much Thai, but it's nice to have them there and meet them anyway. The people in Thailand have a kind spirit about them, and I like that. :)

The food....can I talk about the food again? It's just all good. I love rice, and I love pork, and I love chicken, and I love sauces, and I love the fact that the other day when we bought pizza for all of the girls, there choice of topping was.......KETCHUP! This place is perfect! How I am going to miss it. But I don't want to think about that right now.

I went to see the Buddhist temples in the mountains on Wednesday. They are so beautiful! Pure gold, and they are in this quiet, serene area where there is a BREATHTAKING view of Chiang Mai. I loved it. It was sad to see the tourists so openly embrace the Buddhist philosophies, even though I don't really believe that they understand them completely. But it was a great outing! Tom and Gayle are two awesome tour guides. Haha!

So.....I'm not gonna lie....I miss The Office. Rant over.

Random, I know, but there ya go. I've been here one week, and it's been a great one at that. Thanks for keeping up to date! I'll try to get some pictures on here! You can check out my Facebook as well, and if not, just add me and you can look through my entire album!

Cop-Coon-Cah for reading this......

That means thank you, peeps! Tomorrow I start my Thai lessons! I am so excited! Since I only have two weeks to learn as much Thai as possible, since I won't be able to continue the Thai lessons with the prison visits and MK camp in the coming weeks, we're starting some intense lessons dealing with phonetics, etc. I can't wait! I've learned a few words so far, but not many. Haha.....A for effort, perhaps? ;)

Ahhh....the Thai church was amazing. They started off with singing....I'm going to post a video of it on my Facebook....the girls' voices (of the Daughters of Ruth) were beautiful. So in tune with each other, and so sincere. These girls have come from VERY broken homes, and the fact that they sing with so much peace and honesty is moving. I loved it. Very different from America, but wonderful nonetheless. I still miss my church, but what a rewarding experience!

The Aa-Jaan, or pastor, preached on Jesus being the Bread of Life, and how selfish it is for us not to share the Bread with others. It was a great message. My friend Angela helped translate most of it for me, thank g'ness......mmmmhmmmmm......

How do I explain Thailand to someone?!?! A lot of people have been asking me to sum it up. It's hard! It's a crazy place, but a beautiful kind of crazy. It's so different, the sights, the smells, the people. I feel very blessed to be able to experience this, and to do the work that Christ has called me to do.

English camp for the Daughters starts tomorrow. I am so excited! We've brain-stormed a lot over the lesson plans, and I think the girls are going to catch on very quickly. :)

Take care, mit. (friends) Yeah, I'm bilingual now. Hahaha.....fo' sho'. Not really though.

Well bust my chops....

SO.....I was able to experience a little bit of the Thai culture at an outdoor/indoor/barely any doors market today. OH BOY. I just love food, I don't know how many people I've told THAT secret too, but it was just wonderful getting to take in all of the sights and smells, (yes, friends, even with my lack of a sense of smell I got in a few good whiffs), and really enjoy the FOOD. And oh, THERE IS FOOD! Sticky rice, pork on a stick, fresh pineapple! And oh so very CHEAP! I'm gonna be honest right now, I am not even gonna lie.....I'm drooling a little bit typing about it. AND.....I know with a lack of Starbucks at every corner, which here is replaced by a 7-11, I now have a new favorite! It's called Cha-Yen, which in Thai means Tea-Cold, or Cold Tea. Oh, it's amazing. They mix sugar, condensed milk, and red tea together, and shake it up with ice, and it tastes like heaven. Mine was gone within a minute. OH SWEET MOSES....I could have one every day.

I'm not feeling too jet-lagged, a little tired spurt here and there, but for the most part I'm doing great! God has been wonderful about it thus far....I know He's really helped my body to adjust. Praying for that to continue!

Fun fact.....there are miniature lizards EVERYWHERE....I'll find out the name again and post it, but they're so cute! All over the tops of the walls, but they eat mosquitoes so they're welcomed here. I'll get a picture and post it as well.

Thanks for keeping in touch! Take care, and good night Americans. ;)

Oh bury me NORTH! Of the warm....perrrrairie!

So yeah.....that's a quote from the infamous duo of Abbott and Costello. WELL....so here I am! Made it thus far to Taipei, Taiwan. Have yet to experience symptoms of the swine flu, even though I am surrounded by people in masks. So strange! I really never thought of it as a big deal, but some of these people are terrified!

I was going to update in LA, but this very creepy man seemed very interested in everything I was doing, and I didn't really want his input on my blog. Haha! It was a good time though. Thanks for The Sizzler, Greg.....and thank you security man for not detecting the large amount of money taped to my body. Yeah, I know....but carrying it in my purse just didn't seem like the greatest idea. So I opted for body parts....because that's who I am, and that's how I roll.

I'm not even gonna lie, I am exhausted. Who'd have thought that Taiwan would have showers in their bathrooms?!?! Had I known, I would've prepared! That's amazing! What sweet rapture to have gotten a nice shower! Oh well, I'm more thankful for running water the longer I sit here with gnats and flies getting overly close. I feel like a mere cow. Yes, a cow. Only less the full stomach. :( But bless my soul I had a Coke! Mother of carbonation! It was delicious!

Take care, and stay tuned. I FINALLY, and yes, emphasis was purposely implied, FINALLY got my passport after stressing for most of the weekend, and then my flight was cancelled. HAHA! The Lord has an amazing way of saying, "Don't you like being reminded daily that since I called you there, that I'M in full control?" Yes, of course I do. Sheesh.

But all is well! I spoke to a lot of nice Asians today, and I got my flight schedule back on track. Leaving the same time, just adding a stop to Bangkok. Who doesn't want to go there and explore their airport for five or six hours? Why not?! Or I can nap, because e'erbody likes to fall asleep at a foreign airport with their laptop and wallet! Haha....all righty then.

Can I just brag on some of you a little bit? Many of you have been praying, and some of you have given financial support as well, and it's blown me away how wonderful everyone has been. Seriously, your support has helped me in so many aspects. I thank my God upon every remembrance of you. :) And knowing my track record with homesickness, I will be remembering you often.....oh boy.

So this school that I'm supposed to be interviewing at....I heard that it was mainly for missionary kids, so my first thought is, well....that it was tiny. Turns out, it's in an old sports club building...and when I say old, I mean brand new, hardly used, with a pool the size of my house. Now mind you, the pool will not be the only reason for my decision to teach there, if the Lord wills, but I mean, ya know....I am human. Though God be with the poor souls who ever see me swim. Trust me though, I'm not going in without a turtleneck and flowing modest apparel on. C'mon, I'm Baptist.

So this has been a great rambling session. I'll try to keep everyone updated as much as possible! And yes! Pictures will be taken! Keep in touch, peeps.
